Masi Coltello

This is Mike Davies holding the new MASI Coltello alloy frame set. As far as aero alloy frames go this thing looks sick. The shape of the top tube is ovalized and tapered and the wheel cut on the down tube has this dope little concaved crease hollewd along it. They are not out in store yet but will be around a G$. Frank has snapped up this one to build up. It’s a replacement for his pretzelled Condor frame. And Coltello means knife – which is tough and stuff.

Hagan, AKA HEHill, AKA Hage Dawg always has some good stuff on his blog – check it out: http://dectoneproductions.blogspot.com/ He also is impeccable at colour matching his garments with his shoes and bicycle – it’s surreal.

They took their track bikes on holiday with them and circumnavigated the island and endured storms – is there no end to the coolness of this couple? Words by Frank:

I’m not sure why, maybe it was another spur of the moment brainstorm, but we decided to bring our single speed, direct drive bicycles with us. Rarotonga is the biggest island in the Cook islands, and has a ~35km sealed ring road around the entire island. On one of the days we decided to tour around the island, to get a more organic feel and view from the ground level. With a few photo stops and a drink stop we managed to circumnavigate the island in under two hours, at my notoriously unfit pace. We were also caught in numerous downpours, as one side of the island seemed to have a completely different weather system compared to the opposite side.

Much like Auckland, really.

Hagan took some great shots last night. It was really blustery – so we headed into town instead of going along Westhaven. We ended up at the hill in Parnell we were bombing on Monday and Hage Dawg took these shots of Mike hopping and hopping to fakie up the hill off a curb cut. He had a rad $5 slave he got off eBay that worked out well.

YEAH MIKE!

More of Monday

January 27, 2009

We hit some hills around Parnell and went up to the new Business Studies buildings in the University – Mike killed it with a sick back circles to wheel spin and bar spins out. Jeff and Justin had ridden 60km+ that morning so they were enjoying the chill session. We were thinking about going up there on a TFT ride – pretty cool big area to ride if we don’t get booted by security.

What insanely good weather on the long weekend. Mike and I went to Mahurangi with Soph and Kate and we were in the sea for over an hour – it was so warm. We went for a ride downtown yesterday – I’ll split up the pics on 2 posts. The harbour was a hive of activity – lots happening and alot of people out drinking in the sun. Alot of fun.

Subrosa Malum

January 23, 2009

Subrosa is a BMX company that makes some of the coolest shit and has an amazing team. It’s headed up by Ryan Sher and is a subsidiary company of the legendary Shadow Conspiracy brand.

Mike Lawrence distributes these brands in NZ and is tight with Ronnie from Shadow. Mike is going to be riding one of these new Subrosa Malum urban track bikes when they arrive in March. Finally a frame that is up to taking the punishment Mike will unleash on it.

Subrosa and Shadow are known for their great design, and meticulous attention to detail. Seriously – I believe these guys revolutionised the modern BMX industry and brought an ethos of creative design and marketing that didn’t exist before they launched. Professional as all hell, and with killer design integrity and quality. I have a stack of their stuff. So when they release this bike I think it will bring a breath of fresh air to the sometimes stale track bike community. Here is their blurb on the bike:

The Subrosa Malum Fixed Gear Bike will be offered in 3 sizes. 52 cm, 56 cm, and 58 cm. Features include a 100% 4130 chromoly frame, fork, and handlebars. Other features include Shadow Finger Banger grips, integrated headset, Shadow Interlock V2 Chain, 32H double walled alloy rims, 3/8 sealed alloy front track hub, 3/8 sealed alloy rear track hub, alloy cranks with sealed euro bb, 48-16 gearing, and Subrosa Pivotal seat and post. The frame will be a phosphate grey color.
